It's taken 3 generations for the Di Profio family to progress from the vineyards of Italy to the vineyards of the Niagara Peninsula. The journey has taken us on many side trips but, through the person of our newest winemaker, Fred Di Profio, we are finally back home. We are extremely pleased to be among the vines again.
Guiseppe Di Profio (1895 - 1957)
Our first Canadian winemaker was Guiseppe Di Profio. Since Niagara grapes hadn't developed their reputation yet, he imported his red and white grapes from California. Throughout the late Nineteen Forties and Fifties, Peppe experimented with different varieties and barrels, trying to reach the quality he had known in Italy.
The Delight in Winemaking
The delight in winemaking, more or less skipped the next generation. Although Joe Di Profio Sr. spent some of his childhood hours helping his father make wines, winemaking never caught his fancy until his son Fred became a professional winemaker. He never imagined owning a vineyard, let alone a winery. He has adapted, even in his retirement years, to working in the vineyard and once again helping to make wines.
Fred, after completing a degree in Economics, wandered into the wine industry. He spent the next thirteen years at Pilliteri Estate Wines, Riverview Cellars, Niagara Vintners, the Cold Climate Oenology and Viticulture Institute, Brock University, and as Winemaker at Pondview Estate Winery. Among all of that activity, he also completed his Honour’s degree in Oenology and Viticulture at Brock.
